Hui `Aina o Hana is a cultural land trust dedicated to protecting and preserving culturally significant land in what is known as the Hana coastal district of Maui. Our mission is also to educate in order to insure that these important sites remain available for traditional cultural use and practice.
Hana, often referred to as "the last Hawaiian place" has a history that stretches back to mythological times. Considering that so many of Hawai`i's historical sites have been destroyed and lost, we are indeed very fortunate that so many of Hana's ancient sites remain identifiable and usable today. Our common purpose is to assure that these sites remain relevant to the perpetration and revitalization of Hawaiian culture as a land dependent, community orientated way of life.
The intent of this web site is to acquaint you with who we are and the scope of our mission. In the future we will feature specific sites and projects that we are involved with, as well as stories and profiles of the people and places that make Hana unique to all of Hawai`i.
One of our mandates is to create a community based cultural land trust model that can be adapted by others in communities elsewhere. Eventually this web site will include an index of reference materials and legal documents that can be applied toward this purpose.
If you would like more information about Hui `Aina o Hana or wish to make a donation please contact us so that we may share with you some of the many ways in which you can become involved. He ali`i ka `aina, he kaua ke kanaka (The land is a chief, man is steward).
