The Sludging of Paradise

Maui's "Biosolids" Co-Composting Project

Linda Lingle Endangers Public Health and Environment

This website is sponsored by the Hawaii chapter of CURE to help educate the public and medical community on Maui about the true health and environmental dangers of the sewage sludge co-composting program at the Central Maui Landfill.

Co-composting involves the mixture of clean green waste (tree trimmings, grass clippings, etc.) with sewage sludge.

The Harper Collins Dictionary of Environmental Science defines sludge as a "viscous, semi-solid mixture of bacteria- and virus-laden organic matter, toxic metals, synthetic organic chemicals, and settled solids removed from domestic and industrial waste water at a sewage treatment plant."

WorldWatch Institute press release on the paper Recycling Organic Waste states:

"U.S. researchers found more than 60,000 toxic substances and chemical compounds in sewage sludge mixed with household and industrial waste, making it unfit for fertilizer use."

Maui's sewage sludge co-composting program is one of the most significant public health and environmental issues our community faces.

Alternatives exist for handling our sludge which can cost less, prevent associated health and environmental hazards, and avoid contamination of the quality clean green waste stream.

Sewage sludge, even after composting, is not safe. Yet it is being spread on our parks and playgrounds in large quantities, unbeknownst to the families who use our public facilities. It is being packaged and sold as "organic" soil amendment for use on food crops.

In October 2003 the County Council finally took a long-overdue closer look at this issue, with an independent audit of the co-composting operation recently completed.

This page is not being actively maintained and there are many more recent articles and resources available regarding sewage sludge composting, land application and related issues, but hopefully these links can serve as a starting point for research.
